The number of flights between the USA and Cuba will increase to 110 per day
Several US airlines have announced that they plan to open flights to Cuba as soon as it becomes possible to agree on the details of the routes, but Cuban air carriers have yet to obtain licenses from the US authorities.
US President Barack Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro restored diplomatic relations between countries at the end of 2014. Later were rediscovered embassies in Havana and Washington. Today, work is under way to develop business ties, although the US trade embargo against Cuba is still in place.
According to a spokesman for the US State Department for Transportation, Thomas Engle, the new agreement “creates the conditions for a very important and significant increase in the number of flights between countries,” which is in line with President Obama’s desire to improve relations with Cuba.
In accordance with the agreement, for a trip to Cuba, American citizens will still need to meet at least one of the 12 criteria, including travel within educational tours and business meetings. However, the line between forbidden tourist trips and traveling for other purposes is largely blurred.
Regular commercial flights between the US and Cuba were discontinued 53 a year ago, but in recent years more and more Americans have used charter flights. Last year, about 160 thousands of Americans made short trips to Cuba, located in 145 km from the southeastern state of Florida, where many Cuban immigrants live, whose families left the country after Fidel Castro came to power in 1959. Subsequently, Castro nationalized a huge amount of American corporate and private property in Cuba; The cost of this property was millions of dollars.
Meanwhile, the day before, the United States approved the construction of the first American factory in Cuba since the restoration of diplomatic relations. This will be a tractor assembly plant, on which Cuban workers will work.
