Amazon customers receive parcels with scarves they didn't order: what's going on

Random Amazon customers have been targeted for brushing. The consumer organization said sly retailers sent out Suzhichou-branded scarves to boost sales and create fake reviews on the website. The edition told in more detail with the BBC.

Amazon said that brushing affects all online marketplaces and has "robust processes" in place to address the issue.

The company's specialists assure that there is no reason to panic, and customers should report the unwanted package to Amazon.

North said she didn't receive any other unwanted packages in the mail.

How brushing works

The order generates a tracking number on the marketplace, and after receiving it, the scammer can leave a fake five-star review.

This results in more people seeing and buying inferior products because they have the mistaken impression that they are highly priced.

How does the scammer get the information?

The consumer group said the scammers are getting names and addresses "from anywhere".

According to them, some shoppers reported receiving scarves after ordering another item from the store on the Facebook marketplace.

The details could also have been taken from a public source compromised by a data breach or accessed through an unsecured website.

Targeted people must report the package and change their passwords.

You can keep the package

If a shipment addressed to you arrives unexpectedly, and there was no previous contact with the company from which it was sent, then you can keep it for yourself.

Amazon said in a statement: “We work tirelessly to identify and prevent abuse that affects the customer experience. Sellers are prohibited from sending unwanted packages to buyers, and we will continue to improve ways to prevent abuse and take appropriate action, such as suspending or removing selling privileges.”

For example, in 2021, more than a million families in Britain were victims of brushing.

1839 people were surveyed, and that 4% of respondents said they or someone in their family received a mysterious package from Amazon.

The UK Competition and Markets Authority is currently investigating Google and Amazon for fake and misleading reviews.
