'Slander, defaming Soviet power': Russian communists demand to ban Chernobyl series

The Communists of Russia party appealed to Roskomnadzor with a demand to limit access to the American TV series Chernobyl on all trackers and resources.

The party statement says that “in the Chernobyl series, a genuine tragedy became the object of ideological manipulation on the part of the HBO channel” and that the film “is an ideological tool designed to discredit and demonize the image of both the Soviet regime and the Soviet people,” writes Radio Liberty.

In addition, party representatives sent a statement to the Ministry of Internal Affairs with a request to initiate a criminal case for public libel “against the director, screenwriter and executive producer of the series.”

At the same time, “Communists of Russia” admitted that “the chronology of the events of the series and its key moments mostly correspond to reality.”

The five-part series of the American HBO channel “Chernobyl”, directed by Johan Renck and written by Craig Mazin, was released on May 6, 2019. According to users of the IMDb website, “Chernobyl” took first place in the list of the 250 best television series in history.

The Communists of Russia party took 5th place in the last State Duma elections with the program “Ten Stalinist blows to capitalism”, receiving 2,27% of the votes.

In the 2018 presidential election, party leader Maxim Suraykin took the 7-place out of 8 candidates with the result of 0,68% of votes.

• Craig Mazin has Ukrainian roots. He says it helped him to feel the depth of the tragedy. The creator of the series says that "Chernobyl" is not accidentally coming out right now.
