King Charles III and Queen Camilla will visit Washington, New York and Virginia.

King Charles III and Queen Camilla will make a four-day visit to the United States at the end of April to mark the 250th anniversary of American independence, Buckingham Palace announced on April 14. The visit comes at a time when relations between the US and the UK have become strained, writes The New York Times.

The visit begins on April 27. It includes an official dinner at the White House and a stop in New York City, where the royal couple will meet with the families of the victims of the September 11 terrorist attacks, as well as with Native Americans at a national park in Virginia.

The King will deliver a speech to Congress, marking only the second time a British monarch has addressed American lawmakers in this chamber. Queen Elizabeth II, the King's mother, was the first to do so during her visit to the United States in 1991.

Diplomats on both sides of the Atlantic have been preparing for months for the visit, which is intended to highlight the close ties between the two countries, often referred to as the "special relationship."

However, the visit comes at a tense moment, as relations between the US and the UK have worsened. President Trump has repeatedly mocked and humiliated British Prime Minister Keir Starmer over the past two months, accusing him of cowardice for refusing to join the war against Iran.

Earlier this month, Trump told The Telegraph that he thought the king "would take a completely different stance, but he doesn't. I mean, he's a great gentleman."

The president's harsh rhetoric against Starmer and his threats to destroy Iranian civilization have prompted some British politicians to call for the King's visit to be cancelled. Ed Davey, leader of the Liberal Democrats, made this proposal in Parliament on April 13.

"He's a dangerous and corrupt gangster, and that's exactly how we should treat him," Davey said of Trump. "So will the Prime Minister advise the King to cancel his state visit to Washington before it's too late? Because I'm genuinely afraid of what Trump might say or do while our King is forced to stand by his side. We can't put His Majesty in that position."

The prime minister called the president's rhetoric toward Iran "wrong" and added, "What the monarchy can do, thanks to the ties it builds, is work for decades." He said the purpose of the visit was to mark 250 years of "relations between our country and the United States."

Following events at the White House and Capitol Hill, the royals will travel to New York. In addition to attending events commemorating the 25th anniversary of the September 11 terrorist attacks, the King will meet with business and financial leaders and visit a children's advocacy organization. The Queen will attend an event commemorating the 100th anniversary of Winnie-the-Pooh. She is deeply committed to literacy and promoting reading, so the anniversary of this iconic book is a significant event for her.

In Virginia, the royal couple will watch performances by Appalachian art groups and, as part of the United States' 250th anniversary celebrations, will participate in an event that palace officials have described as a "street festival."

"This visit will be an opportunity to celebrate the shared history of our two countries, the breadth of economic, defence and cultural ties that have developed over time, and the deep people-to-people ties that bind our societies together," Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

After the United States, His and Her Majesty will travel to Bermuda – this will be the King’s first visit as monarch to a British Overseas Territory.
