Shark Protection Plan: U.S. Cities Take Action on Predator Activation

No matter how useful the proposed alternatives, officials say: nothing can absolutely guarantee the safety of those who set sail for the waters of Cape Cod. Recall that between June and August 161 recorded the appearance of a great white shark.

Based on a six-month study by the Woods Hole group of companies, 27 identified shark migration strategies in the region. The report presents a series of measures to improve public safety on beaches throughout the region.

“With so many stakeholders with different interests, it was important that we carefully and scientifically consider our options. An analysis of the alternatives provided us with an objective overview of options, based on research, so that we have a clear understanding of which options may be suitable for our beaches, ”said Ray Ann Palmer, manager of Truro Town.

The report divided shark migration strategies into three distinct categories. The first is based on technology, the second is based on barriers, and the third is on a biological basis. Strategies include tagging, acoustic detection, magnetic selection, barriers, visual control, adaptive masking, and behavior change.

Each category and strategy has a different degree of potential success. For example, visual detection has a very low success rate, because once the shark is in sight, it will be too close to the swimming areas.

Tagging efforts provide only a slight understanding of shark movements, since only a small fraction of the shark population is tagged.

Other results from the report show that buoys play a role in improving public safety in terms of the presence and migration of sharks, but their placement does not guarantee safety and protection from sharks.

Meanwhile, sonar detection systems have not yet fulfilled their potential, and no technological alternatives have been able to successfully separate sharks and humans.

The most important conclusion from the report is that no alternative, or even any combination of alternatives, will ensure the safety of potential swimmers. In addition, the protection used, repellents and camouflage do not prevent shark attacks.

The report emphasizes that changing human behavior is probably the most effective form of preventing shark attacks. The best way for swimmers to minimize the risk of shark attacks is to change their behavior during the peak season.

These predators are protected by state and federal laws. This means that hunting and selection of their species is prohibited. The report also found no evidence that a decline in the local gray seal population would lead to a decrease in the regional shark population.
