Every fifth Russian wants to emigrate - survey

Almost one in five Russians would like to go abroad for permanent residence, a survey by the Levada Center showed.

In recent months, the share of those wishing to emigrate has been growing. In May last year their share was 16%, and in March 2015 - 12%. Currently, 19% of respondents expressed a desire to emigrate.

Respondents were also asked about the extent to which they are prepared for the fact that they are now leaving to live abroad. According to 1,% of respondents stated that they firmly decided to leave or draw up documents.

Another 7% admitted that they are considering the possibility of leaving. Last year, the share of such answers was only 4%.

Another 16% said they sometimes think about leaving. However, 73% of respondents answered that they never thought about emigration.

Those who think about leaving, have linked these reflections with instability in the economy and better living conditions abroad.

Moreover, the popularity of the first response in recent months has increased dramatically: in May of this year, 41% responded that way against 31% in May last year. For better living conditions, 44% of respondents want to leave.

28% of respondents would like to leave to provide their children with a “decent and reliable future,” and another 17% would like to protect themselves from “the arbitrariness of the authorities and officials.” The list of reasons for leaving also includes the opportunity to receive better medical services and easier conditions for doing business in other countries.

Compared to last year, the share of those who are thinking about emigration due to the current political situation has increased dramatically. This year, 11% chose to leave this answer against 4%.

In recent years, the percentage of respondents complaining that the majority of Russians do not share their values ​​has been on the 5-6% level.
