'Every little thing matters': Russian alcohol is being removed from sales in the US and Canada

Liquor stores in the US and Canada have begun throwing away their stocks of Russian vodka in protest of Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine. Writes about it Yahoo!.

In Ontario, Canada, Treasury Secretary Peter Bethlenfalwi has instructed the provincial alcohol control board to ban stores from selling Russian vodka and other Russian-made alcoholic beverages, according to the Canadian press.

“Ontario joins Canada's allies in condemning the Russian government's act of aggression against the Ukrainian people, and we strongly support the federal government's efforts to impose sanctions on the Russian government,” Bethlenfalvy said. “We will continue to support the Ukrainian people during this extremely difficult time.”

Goods will be removed from nearly 700 stores across the province.

“We can’t say that we really support Ukraine while continuing to be a client of Putin,” said Stephen Del Duca, leader of the Ontario Liberal Party.

Elsewhere in Canada, stores in Manitoba, New Brunswick, British Columbia and Newfoundland have also taken similar action.

Nova Scotia Liquor Corporation has removed Russian products from its shelves and website due to "terrible things going on."

British Columbia is halting imports of Russian alcohol, Deputy Prime Minister Mike Farnworth said.

“Our province supports those who understand that peace in Europe after two world wars depends on respect for international law,” he said.

In the US, Jacob Liquor Exchange in Wichita, Kansas decided to take over 100 bottles of Russian vodka off the shelves and poured some on the ground.

“I think the whole world already knows that Russia is at war with Ukraine for no apparent reason,” said store manager Jamie Stratton. - I think this is our sanction. And it may not be much, but every little bit counts.”

In Oregon, a bar owner in Bend filmed him pouring all his Russian vodka.

"Russia is acting like it's 1939 and coming into Europe with all its might," said Bill McCormick, owner of Pine Tavern. “I’m very worried that this will spread to other countries.”

He said that he could lose a few hundred dollars because of the spilled vodka, but it was worth it.

Bob Quay, owner of Bob's Bar in Grand Rapids, Michigan, said he took Russian alcohol off the shelves in "protest against aggression."

“It’s just the little we can do,” he said.
