New Yorker card can now get 10-year-old children and students
Since the creation of this initiative almost four years ago, more than 1,2 a million people have received a free New Yorker IDNYC card. Now the city’s mayor, Bill de Blasio, has announced three updates that will help expand the coverage of this city identification program.
The minimum age for applying for a card has been reduced from 14 to 10 years, and it is now allowed to apply to students living on campuses of local colleges. And technological updates will allow the application system to work faster and streamline the process, writes 6sqft.
The card is known for offering free or promotional memberships to museums and cultural institutions, including popular destinations like the Metropolitan Opera and the Museum of Modern Art, along with entertainment like Zipcar and Chelsea Piers Golf Club.
IDNYC was originally introduced in 2015 by Mayor de Blasio and Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito as a way to “give everyone equal access to all the services and cultural offerings that come with life in New York,” especially those who may have difficulty obtaining official government-issued ID card (homeless, elderly, youth, undocumented immigrants and former prisoners). For this purpose, the identifier serves as a library card and can be used to open a bank or credit account.
Last month, The Times took a closer look at the intricacies of using IDNYC as an identification document for an undocumented immigrant. While the cards are an accepted form of identification, including for city police, the documents are not valid outside of New York - not for federal agencies, airlines or other police departments.
In response, the mayor de Blazio said: “If someone is at a military base, and the other person decides to act, believing that he has no documents, it doesn’t matter what ID card they brought with them. This will happen if they have a local ID, state ID, any other ID. ”
The mayor has repeatedly stated that he will not give out IDNYC data to the federal government, including the deletion of all applicant data. Currently, the city does not adhere to any original documents for filing an application, and copies of documents from old applications are destroyed after two years.
By lowering the age of filing and allowing university documents to be used in the application process, the city opens up the possibility for hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers to receive a card.
Since New Yorkers must provide documentation of "identity and residency," new technology updates will help "some applicants who may not otherwise have sufficient documentation to apply" apply using existing records from the Department of Homeless Services, Office of Human Resources , Department of the Treasury and New York City Housing Authority.
IDNYC "shows that no matter where you are, if you live in the five boroughs, you are a New Yorker," Mayor de Blasio said. Find out how to apply for IDNYC. here.
