Karen Shakhnazarov shared unpleasant experience of treatment in the USA

Famous Russian director Karen Shakhnazarov told how he was treated in the United States, and advised him not to idealize Western medicine.

He shared his experience in an interview with the publication “Arguments and Facts".

The director noted that residents of post-Soviet countries often idealize the United States, but there are also many problems.

“We have a certain idealization of the United States. I worked there and I can say with full responsibility: this is, of course, a great country, but they have a lot of problems, including in medicine. For example, sick leave is issued there for a maximum of four days,” Shakhnazarov explained.

According to him, the Americans find a way out in the administration of potent drugs, and doctors in the United States, in his opinion, are extremely inattentive and do not give patients enough time, do not carry out all the necessary tests.

“Most Americans are very fond of drinking antibiotics and dosing their children with them just in case. I have dealt with American medicine twice and I must say that I have extremely negative memories. There was an accident on the set of the film “American Daughter” - I suffered a severe injury to my foot. I was taken to an American hospital - by the way, it looked very beautiful. The doctor came, examined him, and said briefly: “Well, it seems like there is no fracture!” That's all medical help. And my fingers were crushed - everything was covered in blood, it was a rather unpleasant sight. In this case, we would definitely have an x-ray done. The American doctor simply recommended buying hydrogen peroxide, a bandage and dressing at the pharmacy,” the filmmaker shared his experience.

He added that he had to practically persuade the doctor to bandage at the hospital.

“I say: “Since I’m in your hospital, maybe the nurse will bandage my wound?” The doctor finally agreed: “Okay, now. Jane, do it! As a result, the matter ended with the fact that they treated the leg with hydrogen peroxide and made a bandage. And then my American producer paid $900 for it. I asked him: “Henry, how can this actually happen?” The producer threw up his hands: “This is the kind of medicine we have!” In the United States, ambulances do not come to children with fever. Even if your child’s temperature rises to forty degrees, they will tell you: “Well, take him and take him to the hospital.” And even if you have insurance, they can still take money from you. So there is no need to idealize Western life in general and medicine in particular,” the director concluded.
