US Presidential Candidate Promises Citizenship for All 11 Million Illegals

Democratic presidential candidate Beto O'Rourke 29 May unveiled an ambitious immigration plan that promises 11 millions of people in the US illegally into American citizenship. The plan involves sending thousands of immigration lawyers to the southern border of the United States to help with asylum cases, and allocating billions of dollars to 5 to support the rule of law in Central America.

The former Texas congressman joined the huge list of candidates for the presidency of the Democratic Party. He became the second of more than 20 Democratic candidates who proposed a comprehensive immigration reform plan, despite the fact that the border between the United States and Mexico and thousands of people illegally crossing it dominated the headlines and political discussions in the United States over the past few months, writes Brooklyn News 12.

Other policy objectives, including carbon reduction plans across the country to combat climate change and expand access to health care, have overshadowed immigration in Democrats' electoral programs. At the same time, President Donald Trump focused on calls for tougher border security and expansion of the wall along the southern border of the United States, considering both ideas to ensure that he and the Republican party win the 2020 election of the year.

Another Democratic presidential candidate to propose a full-blown immigration plan is Barack Obama's former Housing Authority chief Julián Castro, who in April called for a full decriminalization of illegal border crossings.

O'Rourke's plan does not go this far, but he undertakes, if elected, to issue presidential decrees prescribing that only people with a criminal background be detained for illegally crossing the border. He also promises to end the separation of immigrant families at the border, withdraw federal immigration courts from their current jurisdiction under the Department of Justice, completely stop funding what he calls “private commercial prisons”, and send 2000 lawyers to the border to help immigrants seeking asylum in USA.

O'Rourke also said he would work with Congress to find ways to legalize the country's 11 million undocumented immigrants, as well as provide a fast track to legalization for "Dreamers" - undocumented immigrants who were brought to the United States as children. He promises to develop appropriate measures within the first 100 days as president. O'Rourke also plans to invest $5 billion to fight violence and poverty in the three Central American countries that currently bring the largest number of illegal immigrants to the United States: Guatemala, El Salvador and Honduras.

The plan "overcomes a generation of inaction to finally rewrite our immigration laws in a way that reflects our values, the reality of the situation at the border, the interests of our communities and the long tradition of a country made up of families from around the world," O'Rourke said.

The Spanish-speaking politician was three times elected a member of the US Congress, representing El Paso (Texas), located on the border with Mexico. During his speeches he constantly reminds the audience that immigrants make up more than a quarter of the inhabitants of his district. He likes to say that El Paso is one of the safest cities in the country "not because of the walls, but in spite of the walls along the border."

The O'Rourke Plan also aims to better monitor and prevent immigrant mortality through the creation of independent border surveillance and increased training for federal personnel. An immigration proposal newsletter published by O'Rourke takes up 9 pages and accuses the Trump administration of “pursuing a brutal and cynical policy aimed at sowing useless chaos and confusion on our borders.”

“This is causing crises in our communities. And he's trying to turn us against each other. When this is done in our name, on our taxes, and with our neighbors, we not only undermine our laws, slow our economy, and damage our security—we risk losing ourselves,” the bulletin states.

Trump himself has repeatedly stressed that his immigration policy is designed to ensure the security of the country.
