Russians decided not to rescue Canadian ghost barge

An icy, unmanned Canadian barge that has sunk to the shores of Russian Chukotka will not be touched until the end of May, until warming comes. The Russian authorities hope that during this time the environmentally dangerous ship with diesel fuel on board will carry the current back to the territorial waters of the United States or Canada.

“Most likely, the barge will remain in the ice until warming, which will occur in our region somewhere in May,” the press service of the Russian department said, adding that the abandoned barge does not yet pose a threat.

“The ship was densely covered in ice. There is fuel on the barge. We do not yet see any threat of a spill. Also, there is no fear yet that the barge has received a hole and may sink with warming,” the Border Guard said, expressing the hope that “the drift of the barge will change towards the territorial waters of the United States or Canada.”
