California will refuse contracts with companies that cooperate with ICE
Recently, a California state law called a sanctuary state limited police cooperation with federal immigration agents. Now, one of the legislators wants to prohibit the authorities from working with companies that have become part of the “deportation machinery” mechanism of the Trump administration.
The legislative act, which 22 February initiated by Democratic legislator Rob Bont, will prohibit cities and counties across the state from entering into new contracts with any company that sells, extracts or analyzes personal information for the US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) or the Customs and Border Protection Service USA (USCBP), writes KTLA.
Bonta said he plans to expand the bill to include all federal immigration agencies. He also intends to ban the state from signing contracts with companies that deal with these agencies.
But the legislator claims that the proposal has so far been initiated in a rather narrow format. The new rule will prevent transactions with only companies that collect data, support detention centers or participate in extreme screening programs.
“This is a way to direct our public dollars to where our values are,” Bonta said. - This is a way to put pressure on suppliers. They can decide to change their behavior or lose our business.”
