Californians are suing Trump again because of immigration rules, this time because of green cards

Two California counties—San Francisco and Santa Clara—announced they are suing US President Donald Trump's administration over new green card rules for immigrants on welfare, calling the rules an unlawful attack on immigrant communities. Writes about this Fox News.

“This illegal rule is just another attempt to blame immigrants,” said San Francisco City Prosecutor Dennis Herrera. “This makes it easier to unfairly target hard-working, legal immigrants while spreading fear and confusion in our communities.”

“The Trump administration's new rule is an illegal, stupid attack on immigrant communities,” said Santa Clara County attorney James R. Williams. “This will harm all members of immigrant communities by reducing access to critical health services and social safety nets that create healthier communities for all of our residents.”

California jurisdictions claim the rule seeks to reverse decades of legal precedent and “forces people to waive benefits.”

Acting Director of US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) Ken Cuccinelli said the change is based on "old American values ​​and self-sufficiency."

“It will also have a long-term benefit to protect taxpayers because people immigrating to this country will not become a public burden, they can stand on their own feet like immigrants in years past,” he said. “This is not only a recipe for their success, but for the success of America growing out of our immigration system.”

But Democrats and immigrant groups immediately called this rule cruel and warned that it could prevent immigrants from getting the benefits they needed. California Senator Kamala Harris called it "unjustified."

“No family should have to fear social benefits,” she said.

While the Trump administration said that the change would give taxpayers a better price-quality ratio, which California officials in turn argued would actually cost taxpayers more.

“This rule forces people to make impossible choices: their health or a better future for their family. We will all bear the cost of this misguided policy, which will shift millions of dollars in health care costs to the taxpayers of San Francisco and Santa Clara counties,” Herrera said. “At the same time, it will displace millions from our local economy and push more people into homelessness.”

“This rule is garbage. We are determined to make sure it ends up in the legal trash bin along with the rest of this administration's illegal policies,” he said.

US President Donald Trump brushed aside criticism and said his administration was doing the right thing.

“I'm tired of our taxpayers paying for people who come into our country and go straight to Social Security, so I think we're doing something right,” he said.
