Somewhat surprisingly, New York is in the top five at the lowest price of $ 100, but does not take first place. The last thing you can buy is $ 100 in Hawaii ($ 86,28), followed by New York ($ 86,51), California ($ 87,46) and New Jersey ($ 88,34).
On the other hand, $ 100 is most expensive in Mississippi ($ 115,74), in Alabama ($ 115,47), in Arkansas ($ 115,07), in West Virginia ($ 114,16) and in Kentucky ($ 113,90).
The group found that “real purchasing power” (the amount of goods that men buy for $ 100) is 34 percent higher in Mississippi than in New York. This means that if you earn $ 50 000 after paying taxes, you can provide yourself the same standard of living as in New York with a salary of $ 67 000 after taxes.
