Personal experience: what our habits are considered rude in the USA
When we get to a new country, we meet new people, and very often their habits, behavior and mentality are significantly different from ours. Blog author Sergey Kurilenko at Yandex.Dzen told by what habits one can easily recognize an American, even in a crowd of Russians.
Next - from the first person.
I don’t know about you, but I think that in the crowd of Russian people I definitely recognize the American by his appearance alone. But we differ not only in appearance, but also in behavior. Moreover, some of the usual American actions by us will be considered rude.
Do not disturb personal space
To begin with, states do not like touch and generally close contact. The concept of “personal space” is very much appreciated there and is almost on a par with private property.
This is more noticeable in small towns, because in some New York there are so many people on the streets that someone will violate your personal space not by will.
And all this is strange, because at first glance the Americans seem very open and welcoming, but even with close acquaintance they try to stay aloof, if only not to violate your personal space once again.
To whistle is rude
Remember how in childhood we were scolded if we whistled in the house? My parents forbade me to do this, frightening me with the fact that this is a bad sign and there will be no money in the house. The Americans are considered rude to whistle even on the street.
On the subject: Prices, internet and parking: 5 cons of living in the USA
A friend on this subject even told a case from life. Once he whistled to an American while working at a construction site, as it was very noisy there. It’s common for us, but then the American asked me not to whistle anymore, but rather shout if necessary.
Do not be greedy!
And last, but probably most important - in America it is considered unprecedented rudeness and even arrogance if you do not leave a tip in a restaurant or even a small cafe. There they take it very seriously. So much so that they can even add you to a kind of “black list”. In any case, you should not return to the institution if the last time you did not leave a tip.
