What burgers in the US are not dangerous to eat 

Twenty-five of the most popular fast food chains in the United States were evaluated for antibiotics in their products.

Only two chains received a perfect A grade—Shake Shack and BurgerFi; the other 23 received a D or F, which means their products contain a lot of chemicals, writes CNN.

Lena Brook, the report's lead researcher, said hamburgers are one of America's favorite foods and their safety is a very important issue, which is why they decided to conduct this study.

Brooke stressed that, after seeing positive changes in the quality of poultry used by fast food restaurants, after past reports from the group, it was decided to focus on beef and hamburgers that are served in the most popular fast food restaurants in the United States.

According to Brooke, networks are ranked by total US sales to determine the 25 largest in this sector. Restaurants were evaluated on three criteria: do they have a policy aimed at putting an end to the use of antibiotics in raising animals; how they implement this policy, if any; checking whether the company's statements in this area correspond to reality.

The report states that Shake Shack and BurgerFi are the only two networks that use beef without antibiotics.

Wendy's network received a D with a minus for its policy on refusing antibiotics, which the authors of the study called "is far from being a comprehensive, but a positive step forward." According to the company's website, Wendy's buys about 15% of beef from manufacturers who are committed to reducing the use of antibiotics to 20%.

Other 22 fast food chains, including the very popular McDonalds, received F. ratings.

“Preserving the effectiveness of antibiotics for future generations is very important to McDonald's. In 2016, McDonald's made good on its promise to stop serving chicken with antibiotics important for human health in its US restaurants. "McDonald's is currently finalizing a global policy on the use of antibiotics in beef, which will begin implementation by the end of 2018," company spokeswoman Lauren Altmin said.

Only seven companies to which the questionnaire was sent answered the questions of the researchers. But the refusal of the survey did not automatically lead to a low score. Restaurants that refused to provide answers were rated according to publicly available information about their antibiotic policy.

The report states that overuse of antibiotics in animal husbandry contributes to a significant spread of antibiotic resistance in people. The World Health Organization, the US Food and Drug Administration and the United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) consider antibiotic resistance to be a serious public health threat.

“Sometimes antibiotics are used to treat sick animals, which is great, we support it 100% and they are a really important part of the veterinary toolkit. But, unfortunately, they are often also given to animals to either cause them to grow faster or for the purpose of so-called disease prevention,” Brooke said.

According to the CDC, at least 23 000 people die in the US every year, and 2 million suffer from antibiotic-resistant infections.
