How to Book the Cheapest Flights for Thanksgiving and Christmas

Now is the best time to lock in airfare and book trips for the upcoming holiday season. Christmas is almost 90 days away, and Thanksgiving is less than 60 days away. According to an expert analysis of Google's airfare data, travelers are entering the "low-price zone," where the cheapest fares are available.
In fact, Thanksgiving airfares actually drop about 60 days before the holiday, with the absolute lowest fares available 35 days before Turkey Day.

For the Christmas season, travelers can start searching for cheap tickets approximately 70 days before their trip. They should pay special attention to deals 51 days before departure to find the best deals.
"If you're planning a trip over Christmas, the best deals usually appear when booking between mid-October and mid-November," Google wrote.
To lock in the lowest prices, it's recommended to set up price alerts on Google Flights to receive a notification when the price of your desired flight drops. You can also save money by considering connecting flights, which, according to Google, average a 22% savings compared to direct flights. Flying Monday through Wednesday also helps save money, as these days are approximately 13% cheaper than weekends.
However, booking on a specific day doesn't significantly affect the price: the cheapest day to buy a ticket is only 1,3% cheaper than the most expensive.
Regarding popular destinations, Google reported that Columbia, South Carolina, was the top-ranked U.S. destination for Thanksgiving, followed by Bozeman, Montana, and Spokane, Washington. For Christmas and New Year's travel, Rio de Janeiro was the most popular international destination, followed by a beach holiday in St. Lucia and a trip to Marrakech.
"It's no surprise that as cold weather approaches in many parts of the U.S., travelers are choosing palm trees over Christmas trees," Google noted. "Whether visiting family or vacationing abroad, saving money on holiday travel is always a joy."
