How to import a dog in the USA

To bring your fluffy friend to the USA, you need a suitable shipping cage, attached to a drinker cage, diapers for animals, to latch the cage floor, blanket or dog bedding, dog passport or similar document certifying that the dog has all the age-appropriate vaccinations as well as a veterinary certificate of her health.

2. Get instructions on where you need to deliver the dog on the day of departure (it should be somewhere near the baggage claim at the airport), and also find out the name and phone number of the person who will be responsible for accepting the dog and processing its documents. This will save you time and avoid any fuss on your departure day.

• Some “dangerous breeds” are forbidden to be carried on board with certain airlines or imported into certain countries. Ask a representative of the airline if you suspect that your dog may be on the forbidden list.

3. Buy a shipping cage. Airlines require that the dog's cage allows it to stand inside to its full height and turn around.

4. Talk to the vet and make sure the dog has all the vaccinations it needs. You should also get a veterinarian's certificate of health. Depending on the country of your location, the vet may advise you to microchip the dog before leaving. This may be a statutory requirement.

6. Come to the airport with a large amount of time before departure, as you will need to hand over your dog in the luggage.
