How to see the Lyrid meteor shower: it will be visible from the US as early as next week

The Lyrids, one of the world's oldest meteor showers, are known for being fast, bright and unusual. And this year you will be able to see them. How to do this, the publication told Time-out.

NASA dates the observation of the Lyrids to 687, so tracking this astronomical event is part of a long history. In 2023, the Lyrid meteor shower is expected in mid-to-late April, and residents of the Northern Hemisphere (yes, this is the United States) can see it at night.

The Lyrid meteor shower will take place from Monday, April 17 to Monday, April 29, 2023. During this two-week period, the peak is expected from Sunday, April 21 to Monday, April 22.

The Lyrids will be visible after dark, at moonrise, and before dawn.

How to watch the Lyrid meteor shower in the USA

NASA recommends finding a spot free of light pollution (building lights, street lights, or traffic lights obscuring visibility) and laying down on a blanket to look up at the sky.

Find the small constellation Lyra (harp shaped) for a good vantage point. The radiant at which the meteors are best seen will make them shorter, but if you look to the side you can see the majestic long trail they leave behind.

When is the next meteor shower?

According to the Old Farmers' Almanac, the post-Lyrid meteor shower will occur in early May 2023. Eta Aquarid is expected in the wee hours of May 4–5 and is associated with Halley's Comet.
