How Ukrainians can enter or continue their studies abroad: 12 programs from universities in different countries

Since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, almost 4 million citizens of the country have become refugees. Thousands of them are students and teachers who can no longer study and work in Ukraine. Many universities allow temporarily displaced students from other institutions to study with them. At the same time, foreign universities and scientific institutions offer Ukrainians to continue their education and work abroad. Ukrainian Global University

The Ukrainian Global University (UGU) is a network that unites the world's educational institutions to help Ukrainians.

“UGU wants to provide Ukrainian students, scholarship holders, scientists and teachers with access to educational institutions around the world, as well as to new scholarships and postdoctoral programs,” say the project initiators.

What the UGU platform does:

• helps to enter or transfer to universities abroad;
• helps to get an internship and a job upon returning to Ukraine;
• offers an orientation program that will prepare you for studying abroad;
• cooperates with DuoLingo, an online language learning program, so that Ukrainians can take English tests for free and receive certificates.

A prerequisite for participation in the program for all students is to return to Ukraine after completing their studies in order to rebuild the country after the war.

How to use the platform and enroll in a university

To join the platform, you must fill in the form.

After that, Ukrainians must go through the full or simplified application process to any educational institution listed on the platform in order to increase their chances of admission.

Algorithm of actions:

• if you join the platform, you will receive a Duolingo test voucher;
• Submit your English proficiency test results back to UGU;
• after that you may be invited for an interview;
• if your candidacy is approved, UGU will send you an official confirmation;
• then you will receive a free consultation regarding the application to UGU partner institutions;
• if these institutions choose you, you will receive scholarship support;
• among other things, you will be able to participate in a program that will prepare you for studying abroad.

The UGU network was created by leading Ukrainian institutions and organizations with the support of the Office of the President, the Ministry of Education and the Embassy of Ukraine in the United States, Harvard and Stanford universities joined the program.

Registration at UGU does not automatically guarantee study at a foreign university.

However, the approval of your candidacy on the Ukrainian Global University platform, assistance with application and interview increases the chances of admission and receiving a scholarship.

Support UA students (Germany)

Ukrainians will be helped to find German educational institutions that accept refugees for study and apply for admission.

How to get help:

• register on the site, indicating your field of study and other data;
• if you have friends or relatives in Germany, you can indicate the region or city where you would like to go;
• after that, your request will be forwarded to a German university that can accept you.

“We try to take into account your wishes, but we cannot promise anything. We help with mediation and with your journey to your destination. In all other matters, contact persons on site will help,” say the initiators of the project.

Important: The Support UAstudents platform helps students as an intermediary only upon arrival in Germany.

However, you can register in advance and let us know exactly when you plan to arrive.

Platform #ScienceForUkraine

The Science For Ukraine platform has online map, which contains job openings in academic and research institutions around the world.

Ukrainians can look for opportunities for education, internships, work, scientific and creative activities in various industries in Europe, Asia, and America.

European research institutions ready to help Ukrainians are indicated on the map with a detailed list of services.

Some of them, in addition to education and work, offer Ukrainians scholarships, free food and accommodation, assistance to refugee families, etc.

Jagiellonian University (Poland)

• For whom: students, applicants

The Jagiellonian University offers students from Ukrainian universities to continue their studies in Poland.

You can continue studying in the summer or go straight to the next course and start studying in the fall.

In general, the university provides Ukrainians with the following opportunities:

• continuing education during the summer semester 2022;
• admission to the first year;
• admission to other courses to continue education;
• transfer to the next course (training starts on October 1, 2022).

The institution also provides housing for students and their families.

How to move to the next course:

• if you have completed at least the first year at a Ukrainian university, you can transfer to the Jagiellonian University for the next academic year;
• this requires the consent of the dean and proper learning outcomes.

To transfer to the university, you need to submit an application, which will be approved by the head of the relevant department of your home university. It is also necessary to have documents confirming the results of your studies.

Tallinn University (Estonia)

Tallinn University has announced free education for Ukrainian refugee students in 2022-2023.

“The university is ready to review the preliminary education of students from Ukraine and evaluate its compliance with our curricula so that they can continue to study at Tallinn University,” the institution says.

To transfer to a university, Ukrainian students must apply for link.

In the application, you need to describe your educational path in Ukraine and indicate which program at Tallinn University you would like to choose.

If the transfer is approved, training will likely begin in the fall.

The university is looking for opportunities to teach Ukrainians the Estonian language before the start of the semester.

Refugees can also apply for admission to Tallinn University.

This year, applicants from Ukraine will not pay a 100 euro registration fee when applying for study programs.

Important: if your documents are not preserved or partially preserved, you must apply to the Estonian ENIC / NARIC center for "academic recognition".

Hampton University (USA)

Hampton University (HU) will accept from 50 to 100 Ukrainian and foreign students who are currently studying in Ukrainian universities.

They will be able to receive free education on the HU campus this summer.

Meals, accommodation and tuition will be fully paid by the university.

Riga Technical University (Latvia)

The university offers free assistance to refugees from Ukraine, in particular training, employment, accommodation, financial support.

Accommodation in RTU

Riga Technical University offers Ukrainians accommodation in dormitories, where several migrants have already been accepted.

To live in RTU hotels, you must apply for refugee status.

Financial support

Since the beginning of the Russian attack on Ukraine, the RTU Development Fund has begun collecting donations for Ukrainian students and teachers.

These funds will be used to cover the daily expenses of Ukrainians in Latvia, as well as to start studying and working.

The university will also offer Ukrainian students paid internships during the summer and provide scholarships.

Scientific activity

Doctoral students of Ukrainian universities can get the opportunity to continue their scientific activities at RTU.

The university has already sent letters with this proposal to 13 Ukrainian partner universities and the Embassy of Ukraine in Latvia.

University of Bologna (Italy)

The University of Bologna offers separate study programs and classes to Ukrainians who ended up in Italy because of the war.

Students will be able to:

• attend still ongoing lectures;
• pass exams;
• receive academic credits (up to 30 academic hours per semester).

To take advantage of this opportunity, you must:

• have Ukrainian citizenship;
• be enrolled in a Ukrainian university;
• arrive in Italy after the start of the war and stay in the country regularly during the entire period of study.

At the same time, students will not be able to temporarily study in educational programs, access to which is limited.

This specialty is medicine and surgery.

How to apply for training:

• choose the ones you need courses (you can choose the subjects available this academic year for different educational programs);
• register for Studenti Online (via this portal, book an appointment at the International Student Administration Office in Bologna or by email at the Campus Student Administration Office);
• bring to the meeting the documents specified in the "Documents to Submit" section;
• the student administration office will tell you how to pay the insurance fee and get a pass (it can be used for one academic year);
• you will have to pay an insurance premium of 1,04 euros.

The university also advises in advance read how to attend lectures, and ask for an exemption from attending exams in person (until May 31, 2022 only).

Documents to be provided:

• completed application;
• duty stamp worth €16,00;
• 1 passport photo;
• copy of the passport;
• a certificate or other document confirming admission to a Ukrainian university.

Technical University of Munich (Germany)

The Technical University of Munich (TUM) offers Ukrainian refugees financial support, advisory services, training and a simplified admissions process.

How to enter the university:

• if you are not a university student but are planning to apply, please contact Central Advisory Group for Students;
• if you are a university student and want to transfer to TUM, you need to apply for training.

“The war in Ukraine has made education impossible for many young people. In response to these extraordinary circumstances, the Technical University of Munich (TUM) launched an integration program to provide war-affected students with access to a university environment. The program is to start from the summer semester 2022. We will provide the details as soon as possible,” the establishment says.

University of Helsinki (Finland)

The University of Helsinki will help students of Ukrainian universities to complete their education, which was interrupted by the war.

The institution offers Ukrainians in Finland to study for free as part of the Open University program.

However, you will not be able to get a diploma or a scientific degree.

“To get a degree education, you can take part in the regular admission process,” the university’s website says.

It is also impossible to get a diploma if you are transferring to the University of Helsinki from a university in another country.

To take part in the Open University program and continue your studies for free, you need to fill out application for admission.

Applications will be considered until the end of 2022, and the program will be valid until 31.07.2023/XNUMX/XNUMX free of charge.

Semmelweis University of Budapest (Hungary)

University of Vienna (Austria)

The University of Vienna offers Ukrainian students to temporarily continue their studies without obtaining a diploma.

Students from Ukraine will be able to participate free of charge in programs and exams at bachelor's, diploma or master's programs during the summer semester 2022.

How to apply for admission:

• check out educational programs at the University of Vienna (list available in German and English);
• choose the direction you need;
• if you need instructions, send an email to [email protected] (add information about what you studied or want to study);
• choose the right items.

Please note that classes are usually held in German (language required: C1).

Send an email to the Studies Service Center. Indicate in the letter what you want to study, as well as your level of knowledge of the language (German and English). Since the semester has already begun, you will only be able to enter specialties where there are still vacancies.

If you have studied before or are studying now, please also send a scan of your most recent certificate with grades. The university will let you know if you can study and you will receive a confirmation email.

After that it is necessary register an account on the u:space service.

Make an online appointment with the admissions office in accordance with the program (for example, bachelor's or master's) that you need. To do this, you need to have a passport or other document to prove your identity.

After registering online, you will receive an email from the admissions office with information on the next steps. You have to pay a student union fee (20,70 euros), which also includes insurance.

Finally, notify the SSC that you have been accepted for training. The SSC will register you for the relevant courses and notify the instructors.

Important: The application deadline is April 30, 2022.

Training will only continue temporarily and will automatically end on October 31, 2022.

However, students will be able to register for the winter semester 2022/2023.
