How Ukrainians get protected status in America: step by step instructions

The US Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has released information on how Ukrainians can apply for Temporary Protected Status (TPS). This is stated in the press release of the department.

The registration process starts on April 19, 2022. All individuals who wish to request a TPS must apply.

To be eligible for inclusion in the program, individuals must demonstrate their permanent residence in the United States effective April 11, 2022.

TPS applicants must:

• file I-821 form "Statement of Temporary Protected Status" within the 18-month period from the start of registration (April 19, 2022 to October 19, 2023); applicants are eligible to file Form I-821 online;
• when applying for a TPS, applicants may also request a work permit document by submitting a completed I-765 form "Application for Work Permit" along with its Form I-821. Applicants may also file Form I-765 online.

USCIS estimates that 59 Ukrainians currently in the United States may be eligible for TPS. Citizens of Ukraine who are currently outside the United States are not eligible for the TPS program, and they will not become eligible by moving to the United States, as they need to be in the country from April 600 at the earliest. Instead, Ukrainians are encouraged to apply for a visa or find other legal ways to enter the US.
