How the shatdaun influenced the work of the Immigration Service
The current shutdown - the partial closure of the federal government - does not affect the activities of the US Citizenship and Immigration Services, according to an official USCIS press release.
All agency offices will remain open, and all individuals must attend interviews and meetings in accordance with the designated schedule. USCIS will continue to accept petitions and applications for benefits, except as noted below.
However, some USCIS programs will either cease operations, or suspend operations, or they will be modified in some other way until programs receive the appropriate funds or are re-approved by Congress, namely:
EB-5 Immigrant Investor Regional Center Program (not to be confused with the EB-5 Program). Regional centers are public or private economic units in the United States that contribute to economic growth. USCIS appoints regional centers that participate in an immigrant investor program. EB-5 will continue to work without changes.
E-verify. This free internet system allows companies to determine the right of their employees to work in the United States.
Conrad 30 Waiver Program for J-1 medical doctors. This program allows J-1 doctors to file a waiver request for two-year residency after completing the J-1 exchange visitor program. The expiration only affects the date by which the J-1 physician was supposed to enter the United States; this does not mean the complete completion of the Conrad 30 program.
Non-minister religious workers. This special category of immigrants allows non-clergy and religious people to immigrate or adapt to permanent resident status in the United States in order to carry out religious work on a full-time basis and in a paid position.
