Quarrel with oligarchs: how US sanctions harm Putin

US sanctions against Russia created disagreement between the oligarchs and the Kremlin, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State for Financial and Sanctions Counteraction David Payman told the publication “Voice of America".

“The high price that we forced Russia and the Russian oligarchs close to the Kremlin to pay has brought disputes into their internal relations and relations with the authorities, with the Kremlin itself. We are imposing sanctions not only to increase the losses that Russia will suffer, but also to bring about a change in behavior,” says Peyman.

The diplomat recalled the “strong transatlantic unity with European partners,” and also added that as malicious acts by Russia become more frequent, America will strengthen its sanctions.

“We will work closely with our European partners to ensure that the harm from sanctions is exponential and that Russia is under sufficient pressure to feel the full force of the consequences of its malicious behavior,” he added.

The diplomat noted that the United States continues to conduct a dialogue with Russia in those areas where it is ready to cooperate. For example, Russia is interested in the absence of the Iranian military in Syria. The United States seeks to harmonize interests and work together with Russia, but this cannot be done in the matter of the annexation of the Crimea and interference in the US elections.

“It is obvious that on issues such as Crimea, Ukraine, interference in our elections, we must first see positive changes on the part of the Kremlin before considering any possibilities of changes in our sanctions policy,” the politician concluded.

Earlier, Estonian special services stated about preparing Russia for a war with NATO over Belarus.
