How AirTag works and why you should buy this device

AirTags are small disks that can be tracked using an iPhone or iPad. Their location is not tracked by GPS, but by Bluetooth. AirTag emits a Bluetooth signal that connects privately and securely to any device on the Find My network (that's Apple's location tracking feature), and then its location is triangulated from its connections and sent back to your iPhone.

For example, imagine that your checked baggage with an AirTag inside is being transported through an airport. The AirTag will connect to any nearby iPhones—say, those in porters' pockets—and the location will be streamed back to your iPhone in the Find My app. For those concerned about privacy, all AirTags are connected to the same Apple ID, so only those who are logged into an Apple device with that Apple ID can see the location of the AirTag.

How to set up AirTag and use it

When you take a new AirTag out of the package, it has a tab on it that prevents it from turning on - pull this tab and the device will wake up. That's all! If your AirTag is already enabled when you receive it, you can enable Customize Mode by opening the Find My app and clicking the plus sign.

Then, when you open the Find My app, you can see the current or last known location of your AirTag. From the app, you can play audio on the AirTag, turn on Lost Item Mode, set up location notifications, or rename the AirTag.

Why AirTags are useful for travel

AirTag allows you to see the location of your baggage at almost any time, which is especially useful for checked baggage. You'll quickly be able to find out if your bag made it to your flight, and if it's left somewhere, you can provide information about it to your airline to help them retrieve your bag.
