How is the day at the American school

How the school day begins and ends, how long lunch lasts, how many lessons there are per day and what are the breaks between lessons. Our son Daniel is in first grade at one of Brooklyn's Municipal Schools, New York. This is an elementary school where children study from the preparatory class (Kindergarten) until the fifth inclusive. Our school is not quite ordinary. In each parallel, there are two inclusive classes where, together with ordinary children, children with autism spectrum disorders study under the ASD Nest program. Such schools in New York 49.

Once a year, around mid-November, our school hosts an open day. During the school day, parents can come to school, attend classes and see how everything happens.

So, what a standard day looks like in a municipal school.

The school day runs from 8: 00 to 14: 10. The school opens at 7: 30. Those who wish can have breakfast at school from 7: 30 to 7: 55.

Before class begins, the children sing The Pledge of Allegiance.

There are eight periods during the day: seven training minutes in 45 minutes and one for lunch and rest - 50 minutes.

In favorable weather, after lunch, during a long break, children walk outside on the school grounds. If cool, then they are in the classrooms. The schoolchildren read, draw, play board games or just talk at will.

An interesting fact: during lunch and a long break, teachers do not monitor the children. Teacher assistants and other school staff are watching them. Teachers at this time have lunch and rest.

Lunch and a long break are divorced in time between parallels, so that there are no crowds in the cafeteria and on the school site. First, children have lunch and walk from the preparatory course to the second grade, and after an hour - from the third to the fifth.

There are no breaks between lessons. One lesson smoothly passes into another. At first it shocked me: how is it - there is no break? Then I realized why this is not critical for children. They do not sit at classes all the time at the tables, but move a lot. The kids have breaks for short gymnastics or yoga. Part of the classes they are sitting on the rug in front of the smart board.

In the first class, among the subjects studied, reading, writing, mathematics, science, social sciences, computer technology, art, music, physical education, dancing and once a week - a special lesson on a chosen topic: cooking, wildlife, underwater world, video and cinema, design, research (cluster).
