How to secure your account after stealing Yahoo user data
Internet portal Yahoo said it was a victim of hackers who stole data about half a billion users.
Yahoo users should take immediate action to protect themselves from hacker attacks in the coming days and weeks.
About what steps to take to protect your account, the newspaper writes USA Today.
Yahoo also owns the Flickr photo sharing site and the Tumblr blogging platform. Tumblr accounts were not affected. However, some Flickr account data may also have been stolen because the Flickr and Yahoo accounts are related.
First of all, you need to change the passwords and security issues of your Yahoo account.
The company Yahoo said it sends notifications to potentially affected users and is taking steps to ensure the security of their accounts. Unencrypted security questions and answers will be invalidated so that they cannot be used to access other people's accounts. Yahoo will also ask potentially affected users to change their passwords.
Portal users who have not changed their passwords since 2014 should immediately change not only passwords, but also security checks.
They should also consider 2-step authentication of their Yahoo accounts to provide an extra level of security. This form of verification sends a text message or a call to the user's phone with a code as the second verification step.
Instructions on how to enable 2-stage authentication in Yahoo can be found here.
Secure accounts on other platforms
In addition, users should change passwords on other platforms where they used the same data.
After hackers gain access to an ID and password for one system, they usually try to use the same combination on several other platforms.
Users should also avoid clicking on links or downloading attachments from suspicious emails that say they contain updates from Yahoo, etc.
Hackers often use news of major breaches to conduct "phishing" scams, sending official-looking emails to gain access to additional accounts.
If in doubt, call or send an email to the official email address of the company to find out if this email has been sent to you and verify it.
Yahoo users should also be careful with all messages that request personal information.
