How shops make us buy more than we actually need

Have you ever entered the store, intending to buy one product, and went out with a package full of things that you didn’t realize.

Psychologist Mo Gelbert calls this the “targeting effect” - stores monitor customer behavior and thus figure out ways to push consumers to purchase based on the results of observation, writes CBS News.

“It’s the science of people’s motivations, their perceptions, their needs, and sometimes their sense of danger,” Gelbert explained.

Tactics include things like placing certain items together—grouping items together so shoppers buy a set at once rather than just one item.

Another trick is signage and coupons. Stores try to convince you that you are getting a good deal.

“Some are selling for $9,99 instead of $10. And some are 50 percent off,” Gelbert says.

Shops seek to take advantage of a strengthening economy and an optimistic outlook for the labor market in order to increase their profits. Many stores attract buyers with the delivery of goods or the opportunity to pick up an order made online at the store at any time convenient for the buyer.

Walmart, for example, now offers the opportunity to pick up goods ordered online at 1800 retail outlets and is expanding this list - you can pick up the ordered goods in the store just a few minutes after ordering. Target also said it has reduced wait times for pre-order customers to 2 minutes.

However, all these amenities lead to the fact that people often buy more than they need.

How to avoid it? Before you buy something, think for a minute if you really need it, and also try to calculate whether the discount offered is so beneficial.
