How American linguists learn the language of Putin

Georgetown University lecturer Elena Budovskaya once sent a letter to her American and Russian colleagues with the idea: “Discuss Putin’s language at the annual conference in Chicago.”

It is recognized that such a response is not expected. One by one, the linguists began to send the topics: “Putin and his key words”, “Putin’s New Year’s speeches”, “Putin’s utterances about Ukraine”, “General with Trump”. Gained on the whole section.

Elena says that this is not a sign of special honor to the Russian president, but a desire to answer the main questions: how and why.

“We need to know what exactly he is doing to us and how,” says Professor Elena Budovskaya. “Many things were impossible to talk about publicly in the early 90s, but now it is possible.”

Helena, a professor from the University of Western Georgia, Ellein McKinan, is also preparing a report for the conference.

Her theme: "Putin and the language of the past: speech cocktail empire scoop." She, like other American linguists, wants to predict Putin’s next steps with the help of language.

“This is a big problem here in America. Nobody really understands him. People only think they understand. Our leaders said, for example, George W. Bush looked into his eyes and saw a comrade, but none of them actually understood him,” McKeenan said.

Learning the language of Putin to foreign linguists is, in fact, not so easy. Sometimes he inserts such proverbs and sayings into his speeches that not every native Russian speaker understands. For example, the awl in the wall and on the side. It turned out that this expression from the language of the special services is connected with the way of stitching cases. The fact that many see Putin’s speech portrait of Trump, and vice versa, also adds relevance.

Putin’s speech researchers say that something is clearly changing now. Jokes on the brink of a foul, which Putin’s voter was laughing at, no longer work. It is not surprising that a change in style will help to predict a change of course.

However, some linguists believe that it is too late to explore Putin’s speech. He speaks less and less often in public.
