How an American lived for two weeks on $ 30
A resident of the United States Laksha Mehta said that food took up a large part of her budget, and was the second item of expenditure after renting housing. All because the woman got used to eat in restaurants and cafes.
Once she discovered that she had $ 50 left, and her salary was to be paid only in 2 weeks. She set aside $ 20 in case of an emergency, and for the remaining $ 30 decided to buy food during 2 weeks.
She shared her experience on the blog. The Penny Hoarder.
What she bought:
- Two 12-ounce (340-gram) boxes of Kellogg's Corn Flakes—$5,36;
- 1 gallon (3,8 L) whole milk - $3,18;
- One pack of pasta weighing 32 ounces (900 grams) - $2;
- Two 26-ounce bottles of pasta sauce - $740;
- Bread - $1,44;
- Pack of sliced cheese - $2,22;
- Three onions - $2,85;
- Two boxes of New York Five Cheese toast - $5,94;
- Four cans of Campbell's tomato soup - $3,39;
Total: $ 29,56
She also used the Ibotta money-back application; for these purchases, the woman received a $ 1,50 return, so the total was $ 28,06.
What she already had:
- Spice;
- Rice;
- Butter.
She made the menu for the week, during the second week the woman ate the same dishes, but changed the order of their preparation to avoid the feeling of deja vu.
Menu for the week:
Day 1
- Cereal for breakfast, grilled cheese sandwiches for lunch.
- For dinner - pasta with sauce, onions and spices.
Day 2
- Breakfast is cereal porridge; the woman decided that she would have breakfast like this for two weeks of the experiment.
- Lunch: New York Five Cheese toast with leftover pasta and sauce from last night.
- For dinner, she cooked rice with onions and spices according to her mother's recipe, calculating everything so that part of the dish remained the next day.
Day 3
- Breakfast - cereal.
- Lunch - leftover rice after dinner.
- Dinner - tomato soup and grilled cheese sandwich.
Day 4
- Breakfast - cereal.
- Lunch - pasta with sauce.
- Dinner: toast with cheese and pasta with sauce.
Day 5
- Breakfast - cereal.
- Lunch - rice with butter.
- Dinner - leftover rice with onions and spices.
Day 6
- Breakfast - cereal.
- Lunch - tomato soup.
- Dinner: sandwiches with cheese.
Day 7
- Breakfast - cereal.
- Lunch - pasta.
- Dinner - tomato soup.
Disadvantages
These dishes are quite monotonous, since the budget leaves no room for variety, fruits, vegetables or snacks.
With such a budget, it is possible to buy bananas, these are some of the cheapest fruits, and at the same time they are quite nutritious.
This experience taught a woman to plan her budget, and also to save at least $ 10 of savings from each salary.
