Apologies Didn't Help: Whoopi Goldberg Was Suspended For Inappropriate Holocaust Speech

The management of the American television channel ABC suspended actress Whoopi Goldberg from participating in a talk show after her statements that “two groups of white people” participated in the Holocaust, reports with the BBC.

ABC News reported that Goldberg would not be on the air for two weeks.

In a memo to staff distributed on the evening of February 1, ABC News President Kim Godwin wrote: “I am suspending Whoopi Goldberg for two weeks for her inaccurate and offensive comments. The decision takes effect immediately. All of ABC News stands in solidarity with our Jewish colleagues, friends, families and communities."

“Decisions like these are never easy, but they are necessary,” she added. “Just last week, I noted that ABC News has a culture of purpose, kindness, inclusiveness, respect and transparency. Whoopi's statements are inconsistent with these values."

"Words Matter"

On Tuesday, Goldberg issued a public apology for her comments for the third time. “Yesterday on the show I misspoke,” she said, opening her talk show. “The Holocaust is really about race because Hitler and the Nazis considered Jews to be an inferior race. Words really do matter, and mine are no exception. I have been corrected and I regret my comments. I also support the Jewish people."

The cause of the scandal was Goldberg's words during a talk show on ABC on January 31. The 66-year-old Oscar winner said the genocide of Jews during World War II was due to the inhumane treatment of one group of white people by another, but there was no racial overtones.

The actress, who has been on The View since 2007, brought up the issue when discussing the Tennessee School Board's ban on the Holocaust graphic novel on the grounds that it featured nudity, profanity and suicide.

“I’m surprised that you were bothered by the fact that there was nudity in the book. First of all, this is a work about the Holocaust, about the murder of six million people, did that bother you?” - Goldberg said during a talk show.

“Let's be honest. The Holocaust is not about race. No, this is not about race,” Whoopi Goldberg added.

Co-host Joy Behar tried to convince Goldberg by pointing out that the Nazis considered Jews to be an inferior race. However, Goldberg stood her ground: “No, this is not about race. No. The point is the inhumanity of some towards others.”

“It’s about white supremacy, it’s about the persecution of Jews and Roma,” added co-host Ana Navarro. “But we’re talking about two groups of white people,” Goldberg snapped.

A few hours later, amid the uproar, she apologized. “In today’s program I said that the Holocaust is not about race, but about the inhumane attitude of some people towards others. I had to say that it’s about both,” the actress wrote on Twitter.
