Famous American city imposes state of emergency due to hacker attack

A state of emergency was declared in New Orleans (Louisiana), a number of computer servers were closed due to a hacker attack that the city suffered. Writes about it Tech Crunch.

Suspicious activity was seen at about 05:00 on December 13th. By 08:00 a hacker attack had reached its peak of activity. According to Kim Lagru, head of the city’s information technology department, it was mainly about phishing and extortion attempts. As soon as the city authorities confirmed that the city was attacked, the servers were closed.

Numerous local and state governments suffer from ransomware attacks, file encryption malware that require money for a decryption key.

Pensacola, Florida, and Jackson County, Georgia, are just a few examples of a near-constant stream of ransomware attacks over the past year. Louisiana's state government was attacked in November, prompting officials to deactivate government websites and other digital services and forcing the governor to declare a state of emergency.

Governments and local governments are particularly vulnerable because they often do not receive sufficient funding and resources, and cannot protect their systems from some of the main threats.

New Orleans seems to have been somewhat prepared to work without the Internet, which officials say was the result of training. The investigation is at an early stage, but at the moment there is no evidence that city officials interacted and provided credentials or any information to possible attackers.

The police, fire and security services are ready to work outside the city's Internet network. However, other services, such as building inspection planning, are handled manually.

The Real Time Crime Center in New Orleans operates outside the city network, but cameras throughout the city record video regardless of the Internet.
