A well-known airline weighs all passengers before boarding the plane.
The New Zealand Civil Aviation Authority requires its national airline to weigh passengers departing on international flights from Auckland International Airport, reports CNN.
The program, which Air New Zealand calls Passenger Weight Surveys, is a way to collect data on aircraft weight and distribution, the airline says.
“We weigh everything on board the aircraft, from cargo to food on board and baggage in the hold, passengers and crew,” Alastair James, the airline’s load control improvement specialist, said in a statement.

Still, weight is a personal matter, and not everyone wants to disclose it. To protect people's privacy, the airline says it has made the data anonymous.
Travelers are asked to step on a digital scale when checking in for a flight. Their weight information is then sent to the system, but not displayed on the agent's screen.
They also place their luggage on other identical scales for separate weighing.

“We know getting on the scale can be tricky. We want to assure our customers that there is no visible display anywhere. No one can see your weight, not even us," James said.
This is not the first time Air NZ has asked passengers to step on the scale before boarding a flight. Passengers on domestic flights took part in the study in 2021, but the study of the weight of international travelers was postponed due to the pandemic.
Among the people who may be asked to participate in the weigh-in program are those flying direct from Oakland to New York's John F. Kennedy Airport.

The 17-hour flagship route launched last fall as the backbone of Air NZ's post-pandemic strategy. It is also one of the longest flights in the world.
