Researchers at the U.S. Geological Society have discovered that the hot spot that feeds geysers, mud springs, and fumaroles in Yellowstone National Park is gradually disappearing.

In a new study, a team of scientists has discovered traces of two colossal super-eruptions 8,7 and 9 million years ago. “We discovered that the deposits supposedly from smaller eruptions were in fact colossal layers of volcanic material left over from two previously unknown super-eruptions around 8,7 and 9 million years ago,” says lead author of the study, a volcanologist from the University of Leicester in UK Thomas Nott.
