Israel has suspended the repatriation of Jews living in Russia

The repatriation department of the Israeli embassy in Moscow has suspended the reception of Russian citizens until October 27, but then this suspension may be extended, reports Meduza.

“The Repatriation Department suspends accepting visitors for the issuance of repatriate visas until October 27, 2023. Further information will be published on the embassy’s website and social networks,” the diplomatic mission’s telegram channel says.

Earlier, the chief rabbi of Moscow, Adolf Shaevich, announced that the embassy had suspended the procedure for the repatriation of Russians.

“Yesterday the Israeli Ambassador spoke with many people via Zoom, I also participated. Currently, the consulate does not accept applications, does not accept people, and has stopped accepting applications for permanent residence for some time. He was asked the question: when is it planned to resume? He said: nothing is known in this regard,” said Shaevich.

The rabbi suggested that this decision may be related to Israel's war with Hamas.

“Apparently, all bureaucratic structures there have reduced their activities due to many circumstances. Many were drafted to go to war. There are many reasons,” he concluded.

A similar version was expressed by lawyer Alexey Kovalenko. According to him, consular checks at Israeli embassies in all countries of the former USSR were suspended indefinitely due to the fact that embassy security officers were brought into service as reservists.

Kovalenko also noted that repatriation was not officially prohibited, but now only those who managed to pass consular checks and received a repatriation visa can move to Israel. Another option: enter Israel on a tourist visa and go through the entire procedure on the spot.

Repatriation is a way to obtain Israeli citizenship. It is suitable for those who have Jewish roots going back three generations. According to the publication Ydinfo, in 2022, about 70 thousand people from 95 countries repatriated to Israel. According to information Jewish Agency “Sokhnut” (engaged in repatriation), last year 37 people arrived from Russia to Israel.
