Beat with a cross: a priest of the Moscow Patriarchate attacked a Ukrainian colleague right during the funeral

Last week, a Russian priest interrupted the funeral service for a dead Ukrainian soldier by beating another Ukrainian Orthodox priest with a cross over his remarks about Russian President Vladimir Putin. The edition told in more detail Newsweek.

A July 22 video from the funeral of soldier Oleksandr Zinoviy shows a Russian priest, identified by local activist Sergei Timkov as Mikhail Vasilyuk, rushing to the podium where a Ukrainian priest, identified as Anatoly Dudko, was speaking.

Dudko reportedly said that Putin started the war in Ukraine "because of the believers of the Russian Orthodox Church" and this prompted Vasilyuk to attack him.

The footage shows the Russian priest trying to rip the cross off Dudko's neck and then hitting him with the cross he had in his hand. The fight was dispersed by the military, who dragged Vasilyuk away. Then the memorial service continued.

Local media reported that Zinovy ​​died in the city of Vinnitsa.

Timkov, who detailed the altercation on Facebook, said that Dudko sustained minor injuries as a result of the attack.

“In my opinion, this incident goes beyond all possible and impossible limits of arrogance,” the activist wrote. “Based on the foregoing, I additionally ask law enforcement agencies to ensure order at any meetings.”

Vinnytsia police have been notified of the incident, and a criminal case has been initiated.

In June, Mykhailo Podolyak, a senior adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, said the country's military casualties were between 100 and 200 per day. A week earlier, Zelenskiy said the daily death toll ranged from 60 to 100 people.

On July 27, White House officials estimated that more than 75 Russian soldiers have been killed or wounded in the ongoing war in Ukraine — about half of the troops originally sent to invade the country in February. While Putin has refrained from announcing a mass mobilization, the latest report follows a string of reports alleging that Moscow is pushing for more people to be recruited into its armed forces.
