19-year-old Idimo Sherova from the Dangara district says that on her wedding night, her husband Firuzi Muhammadrajab accused her of not being a virgin. He beat her and forced her to admit that she already had sex, writes “Currently,".

“I was very scared and followed all his instructions until the morning. He demanded that I confess my sinfulness. I refused. Then Firuz began to threaten that I would die by hanging. After that, I repeated everything he said. I said that a neighbor boy took my virginity when I was eight years old,” Idimo said.

After this, a video of a half-naked Idimo with her “confession” was circulated in the area. It even appeared on the mobile phones of local schoolchildren.

“Every time I see people talking and laughing, I feel uneasy: it seems that they are laughing at me. Now I breathe, but I no longer live. I want people to know: I am a virgin and I have been slandered,” says the girl.

Firuz Muhammadrajab, the former husband of Idimo, in an interview with reporters reiterated that his ex-spouse was not a virgin, citing the fact that she herself admitted this.

“She admitted that she lost her virginity at the age of eight. There is a video of her confession. I don’t know who distributed the video among the villagers,” Firuz said.

Shemova went to the court of Dangara district and demanded 50 thousand somoni (about $ 5 thousand) from her ex-husband as moral damage. However, the court decided that there was no humiliation of honor and dignity.

Idimo claims that before the wedding, as well as after the accusations of her husband, she underwent a medical examination four times. Doctors in Dangara, Bokhtar and Dushanbe found that she still has not lost her virginity.

Fact of virginity

In traditional Tajik society, it is believed that a girl should be “chaste”, and if she marries not a virgin, she can be kicked out of the door in disgrace. Parents, as a rule, refuse to take their daughter back.

According to Tajik law, before marriage, women and men must undergo a physical examination and pass a genetic analysis (to exclude closely related marriages), as well as tests for HIV, hepatitis and other diseases. HIV carriers and people with hepatitis cannot officially register the marriage.

According to the Republican Center for Forensic Medicine in Dushanbe, in 2018, they received 570 applications asking to establish the virginity of women. Usually, this is done by the parents of girls who are accused of having already had sex.

The main thing that unites them is the public demonstration that the woman married as a virgin. This tradition is called differently in different regions - “red apples”, “Japanese flag” or “sheet”.

After the wedding, the young are sent to the room for sexual intercourse. At this time, relatives are sitting under the door (in some regions from the groom's side, in some - from the bride's side). They must testify that the bride was a virgin - take a sheet or a cloth prepared in advance with traces of blood and show it to other relatives. In some cases, clothes with traces of blood are hung out for all to see.

In this case, doctors say that the blood during the first sexual intercourse is not always, it depends on the individual characteristics of the woman's body. According to Gulzhan Salykbayeva, gynecologist of the ON CLINIC medical center in Almaty, about 30% of first sexual intercourse are not accompanied by bleeding.

“It could be the physiology of the hymen. The hymen can be quite stretchable and can be of different shapes. If it is semilunar or does not rupture completely, then there may be no bleeding at all. But this does not mean that this girl was sexually active,” explains Salykbaeva.

But the requirements of tradition are unequivocal - there should be blood.

After that, she went to the doctor, who confirmed that Mastona had married a virgin, but her acquaintances still believe in the charges of her ex-husband.

“I fell to my knees and swore”

The marriage of 28-year-old Maysara from the Vakhsh valley of Tajikistan lasted only one day. Husband doubted chastity his wife and forced her to undergo a medical examination twice. The conclusions of both examinations were the same: Maysara was married to a virgin. The husband calmed down, but she didn’t want to live with him after that.

“My husband humiliated me in front of his mother and sisters by doubting me. “I fell to my knees and swore it wasn’t true,” she says.

Killing a sister

At the end of November 2018, 23-year-old Tolib Ashurkulov strangled and then decapitated his underage sister, a student of the 11 class, deciding that she "disgraced the family" by walking with an adult man.

A minor Orzugul, a student of 11 middle school class N42 Istaravshan, left October 27 home, and she did not return home in the evening. Relatives sounded the alarm, raised all neighbors and acquaintances, appealed to the police. However, the search for the girl did not give a result.

Only six weeks later the body of the schoolgirl was found. As a result of the investigation, it turned out that the girl did return home a few hours before her “disappearance”. The elder brother met her there, who immediately accused her sister of dishonoring her family. After that, the girl ran into the barn and threatened to hang herself. But the brother himself strangled her with a synthetic bag from under the bow, and then cut off her head with a cutting machine.

50-year-old father of the girl Bakhodur Ashurkulov helped his son hide the traces of the crime. Together with her son, they took the girl's dismembered corpse in the trunk of their car and hid Zarhalol on the outskirts of the village in an old waterless canal in the territory of the jamoat (rural community).

Only on December 11, the decapitated body of a girl with signs of decay was accidentally discovered by the Ashurkulovs' neighbor, who reported the finding to the police. And already December 17 law enforcement officers detained a brother killed on suspicion of committing a crime.

Ashurkulov was sentenced to 18 years in prison.

Telegony supporters

To explain why this tradition is needed in the 21st century, its supporters often refer to the conspiracy theory and anti-scientific theory of telegony. According to her, a woman’s vagina “remembers” all her sexual partners, and their genes are passed on to children conceived later with another man.

From the standpoint of modern science, telegony is a superstition, but it is referred to by religious and public figures, teachers and politicians. For example, Anna Kuznetsova, a Russian children's ombudsman, spoke in support of telegonia - she said that a large number of sexual partners of a woman could lead to the birth of a child with disabilities. Then she said that does not rememberthat said it.

And the Minister of Health of Chuvashia, Vladimir Viktorov, said that if a woman had seven partners, then “this is guaranteed infertility.” He did not explain why exactly seven.
