Study: data on the number of illegal immigrants in the United States are greatly underestimated
The number of illegal immigrants in the United States is two times more than official statistics say. This is evidenced by the results of a study by Yale University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, writes Fox News.
Authorities claim that the US lives from 11 to 12 million illegal migrants, but university researchers believe that in the US 2016 year, there were 16,7 million illegal immigrants in the United States, and this number has now grown.
Bloomberg writes that the study could confirm Trump’s assertions that the real number of illegal migrants in the United States reaches 30 million, and could be a good argument for the president to toughen his position on this issue.
Scientists compared inflows and outflows of immigrants, information about detentions and death rates. They evaluated data from 1990 to 2016 year.
«Наша первоначальная идея была в том, чтобы просто проверить существующее число на здравый смысл. Мы получили число на 50% выше. Это заставило нас поломать головы», — сказал представитель Йельского университета Эдвард Каплан.
Kaplan also noted that the results of the study may provide an argument against limiting the flow of immigrants due to crime. New data may indicate that the crime rate among irregular migrants may be lower than previously thought.
«У вас осталось неизменным количество преступлений, но теперь у вас вдвое больше людей, что означает, что уровень преступности среди нелегальных мигрантов на самом деле вдвое ниже, чем считалось ранее», — говорит он.
According to the researchers, the figure in 11,3 million, which is used by the authorities, is based on a survey conducted by the US Census Bureau, and the answers from such surveys are not always honest.
Scientists understand that their research may add fuel to the debate over illegal migration, but note that their research did not have a political background.
