'Exceptional case': doctors revive a frozen tourist after a 6-hour cardiac arrest

Doctors reanimated the 34-year-old British woman, whose heart stopped for six and a half hours as a result of hypothermia.

The incident with Audrey Mash and her husband in the Catalan Pyrenees occurred on November 3, but doctors from the Vall d'Hebron clinic in Barcelona spoke about the “exceptional case” only the other day, the publication writes.RIA News«.

The couple took a walk in the mountains when, after weather conditions worsened, the woman lost consciousness. The husband said that she did not have a pulse, her breathing stopped - she showed no signs of life at all. When rescuers arrived, Mash's body temperature dropped to 18 degrees Celsius.

For resuscitation of a woman, a system of extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) was used in the clinic, with the help of which cardiac activity was still able to be restored.

To the surprise of the doctors, the woman did not have any neurological complications, with the exception of the loss of finger sensitivity, as a result of which she had to buy new trousers due to problems with button fastening.

According to a clinic employee Eduard Argudo, the state of her brain became a key factor for resuscitation of the British woman.

“The brain cooled rapidly and its oxygen demand dropped dramatically even before the heart stopped,” he said.

It is noted that cases of resuscitation of a victim with such a prolonged cardiac arrest are unique. This happened for the first time in Spain.
