Another 9 million Americans are eligible for quarantine financial assistance, but may lose it due to slowness

The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) said it plans to notify 9 million Americans who may be eligible for coronavirus-related government financial assistance but have yet to receive their payments. Writes about it CBS News.

This mostly applies to people who don't usually file a federal tax return. They will need to register by October 15 through the tool IRS Non-Filersto receive your payments before the end of the year. Some 160 million taxpayers have received payments to offset the economic impact of the COVID-19 pandemic, according to the IRS.

The program sends checks to people with middle and low incomes, $ 1 for sole taxpayers, $ 200 for married couples, and $ 2 for a child under 400. To deliver checks as quickly as possible, the IRS relied on the most recent taxpayer tax returns, which included either bank details for direct deposit or home address for paper checks.

But there are millions of Americans who do not file taxes, such as some seniors and low-income households, which has slowed the delivery of checks to these groups.

“We are taking this additional step to help Americans who may not know they are eligible to receive this payment or may not know how to register,” IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said in a statement. “People who are not required to file a tax return can quickly register on IRS.gov and still receive their money this year.”

The IRS says it will start sending letters on September 24th informing recipients that they may be eligible for payment if they meet certain criteria, such as if they are citizens or resident aliens and have a valid Social Security number. By registering on the IRS website, people can submit their bank account information to the tax office, which will transfer money there by the end of the year. Those who do not provide bank account information will receive a check in the mail.

However, if eligible individuals are unable to register by October 15 and have not yet received their check, they will have to file a federal tax return to receive payment. In some cases, this may mean waiting for the current tax year 2020 to be filed in early 2021.

The IRS also warns that receiving a registration letter before October 15 is not a guarantee that someone is eligible for a check. Some people are excluded from payments, such as immigrants without a green card and those in prison.

People with high income are also excluded: people earning more than $ 99 and married couples earning more than $ 000 are not eligible for benefits.
