A disabled person moving in a wheelchair had to crawl down the plane ladder: he is outraged

A wheelchair user had to crawl off a Ryanair plane in Sweden. He described the incident as "unacceptable". Writes about it with the BBC.

Adrian Keogh, from Wicklow in Ireland, was told that help would take an hour when his flight landed at Landvetter Airport in Sweden.

According to him, the flight attendants of the Ryanair flight suggested that he crawl out of the plane instead of waiting.

Ryanair said the crew did not tell the man to get off the plane. Landvetter Airport apologized.

Kio, who suffered a spinal injury in a construction accident, couldn't wait an hour for help disembarking from the plane, because after the flight he was in pain and needed a toilet.

The Irishman was traveling with his brother, who offered to take him down the stairs, but Keogh refused as he thought it was too dangerous.

“They were steep steps made of corrugated steel,” the brother explained. “If he had fallen, we would both have been injured, so I had to climb down myself.”

A wheelchair user since 2015, Keogh noticed that air travel can sometimes be frustrating.

“This isn’t the first time I’ve been stuck on a plane after everyone has disembarked,” he said. - This is unacceptable. I'm just asking to be able to travel with dignity."

James Taylor of disability equality charity Scope described the incident as horrific.

“For a long time we have been concerned that airlines and airports are failing people with disabilities,” he said. “This attitude often degrades their dignity, causes stress and anxiety, and sometimes prevents such people from traveling altogether.”

"Several Unforeseen Events"

Landvetter Airport issued an apology and said it "deeply regrets" what happened to Keogh and blamed "several unforeseen events" for the delay in aid.

As a company spokesman said, the long wait times "are not up to our usual standards of service."

Ryanair said a third-party service provider provided special assistance at the airport. The airline said they were investigating the incident.

Similar problems have been reported at other airports, including from BBC security editor Frank Gardner, who was left on the plane at Heathrow Airport.

How do you book or complain about airport assistance:

• passengers should contact their airline, tour operator or travel agent for assistance at least 48 hours before travel;
• if the passenger does not notify in advance, assistance will still be provided, but you may have to wait longer to get help;
• if something goes wrong and you are not satisfied, you should file a complaint directly with the airline or airport;
• if you are still unhappy, then take your complaint to an alternative dispute resolution body, which offers alternative methods such as mediation and conciliation instead of going to court.
