The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine has not received official information from the Russian side about the death of the youngest son of former President Viktor Yanukovych on Lake Baikal.

Information from the Russian authorities comes controversial, said Foreign Ministry spokesman Yevgeny Perebyinis at a briefing.

He noted that the consulate of Ukraine in Novosibirsk immediately after the announcement of the death of Viktor Yanukovych Jr. sent a request to the law enforcement authorities of the Russian Federation.

“There was only verbal information at the request of our consuls. The information is very contradictory: over the telephone they reported that the deceased is a citizen of the Russian Federation and is the namesake of the President of Ukraine, and then, also over the telephone, they reported that he is a citizen of the Russian Federation, he had documents in the name of Davydov,” the press officer said. Secretary of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) Perebiinis.

According to him, taking into account this information, it is impossible to create a complete picture.

“But we will try to get a written and official response indicating the passport details of those who were involved in this incident,” Mr. Perebiinis said at the briefing.

He also noted that the Foreign Ministry can not confirm the information of the media about the arrival of Viktor Yanukovych in Crimea for the funeral of his son.

Earlier, Viktor Yanukovych’s eldest son Alexander, in an interview with Komsomolskaya Pravda, said that his brother was buried in Sevastopol because their mother lives in Crimea. According to the publication, former Ukrainian President Viktor Yanukovych and members of his family were at the funeral.

The Kriminform publication notes that the son of the former president was buried in an unmarked grave.

The day before, the Party of Regions confirmed the death of the ex-president’s son and expressed condolences to his family. According to the party's press service, 33-year-old Viktor Yanukovych Jr. drowned on Lake Baikal - his car fell through the ice on Friday, March 20.

An accident on Lake Baikal occurred about ten kilometers above Olkhon Island, Major Andrey Shutov, a spokesman for the main department of the Russian Emergency Situations Ministry in the Irkutsk Region, said.

At the same time, he did not speak about the identity of the deceased, since this question, according to him, falls within the competence of the police.

A Volkswagen car with six people fell through the ice - five of them were able to get out of the car.

The rescuer received information about the accident at Lake Baikal and took a group of five people ashore, said a representative of the main department of the Ministry of Emergency Situations of Russia in the Irkutsk region.

On the shore, the rescuers handed over these people to the police and returned to the place of the car’s failure, where they found the body of the drowned man.

“Our rescuers returned to the scene, using the GPS navigator they found the place where the car had sunk. The body was lifted from the ice hole on board, it was also taken to the shore and handed over to the police,” said a representative of the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations.

According to the adviser to the Minister of Internal Affairs Anton Gerashchenko, no criminal proceedings were opened in Ukraine against Viktor Yanukovych Jr.
