Infections and blindness: FDA warns of 26 popular brands of eye drops

Twenty-six over-the-counter eye drops, including those sold under brands such as CVS, Target and Rite Aid, can lead to serious eye infections, vision loss or blindness, reports CNN.

The US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) found "unsanitary conditions at the manufacturing facility and positive bacterial test results from environmental sampling in critical drug manufacturing areas of the facility" and is recommending a recall of the products.

Eye drops sold under the brands CVS Health, Rite Aid, Target Up&Up, Leader (Cardinal Health), Rugby (Cardinal Health) and Velocity Pharma must be sterile.

According to the FDA, there have been no reports of injuries resulting from the use of the products at this time. But the agency says anyone "who has signs or symptoms of an eye infection after using these products should talk to their doctor or seek medical attention immediately."

It also recommends that anyone who has these eye drops stop using them immediately.

Target, Rite Aid and CVS are removing products from store shelves and stopping selling them online. Products sold under the names Leader, Velocity and Rugby may still be in some stores or available online and should not be purchased, the FDA said.

Earlier this year, the FDA issued a warning not to use certain other eye drops due to microbial contamination. The US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has reported that the use of eye drops contaminated with drug-resistant bacteria has led to vision loss in some patients, surgical removal of the eyes and death.
