Immigrants refuse food stamps for fear of not obtaining citizenship

Legal and illegal immigrants seem to refuse state aid in the purchase of infant formula and healthy food for children, as they fear that the Trump administration will not allow them to receive green cards if such assistance is provided.

Recently, the US president offered to refuse citizenship and even green cards to any immigrants who accept government assistance, including social security, children's health insurance, the ObamaCare program, and the federal program Women, Infants and Children nutrition, writes New York Post.

US medical professionals and lawyers, including those from New York, say they receive calls from panicked immigrant families, demanding to be expelled from the WIC program, Politico reports.

Zach Hennessy, vice president of programs at Public Health Solutions, a large non-profit organization in New York, says his agency is struggling to cope with the demands of immigrants. They want people who are eligible for benefits to receive these benefits, but if they advise them to do so, they can harm them in the long run.

Trump's plan is the brainchild of senior adviser Stephen Miller, 32, who was also one of the main architects of the "zero tolerance" immigration policy at the southern border. This policy led to the separation of more than 2500 children from their parents as part of an administrative crackdown on illegal immigration.

The administration will implement the policy on an executive order, which means that it does not require the approval of Congress. This is one of Miller's goals to reduce the number of legal immigrants entering the United States each year.

Immigration lawyers and lawyers claim that this innovation will be the biggest change in the immigration legal system over the past decades. According to preliminary estimates, more than 20 of millions of immigrants may suffer from changes. Agencies in 18 states reported that the number of applicants for food stamp programs has decreased to 20 percent: people are afraid of losing their possible chances of obtaining citizenship.

Lawyers say that a change in policy may also lead to the fact that children born in the United States may have an increased risk of health problems, including low birth weight, which may ultimately lead to increased health care costs. WIC serves about half of all babies born in the United States, providing vouchers or grocery cards that allow pregnant women and families with young children to buy food and infant formula.
