Immigration Service Provides $ 9,5 Million To Help Immigrants Obtain US Citizenship
The US Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS) 24 September allocated grants in the amount of 9,425 million to 40 organizations in 19 US states to help them prepare eligible immigrants for the naturalization process.
This is stated in the press service of the Ministry.
Grants issued in the 2018 fiscal year must be used before the 2020 year. This money will be used to help future citizens adapt to public life in the United States through educational programs aimed at improving their knowledge of the English language, US history, and citizens' rights and responsibilities.
USCIS awarded grants on a competitive basis for organizations that provide two types of services: assistance to permanent residents in preparing for naturalization and living in the United States; providing a wide range of assimilation services for permanent residents who entered the United States as refugees.
Organizations that have received grants can use these funds to provide services only to those immigrants who have the legal status of a permanent resident in the United States.
Under the Citizenship Preparation and Adaptation Grant Program, since its launch, more than 82 million dollars have been distributed through 393 competitive grants for immigrant organizations in the 38 states and in the Columbia region. Over the years, 10 has helped prepare more than 200 000 immigrants for naturalization.
USCIS assumes that, through grants allocated in 2018, approximately 25 000 permanent residents will receive citizenship preparation services before 30 September 2020. More 12 500 immigrants continue to receive these services as part of the current grant program, which was allocated in the 2017 year and should be used before the 30 September 2019 year.
The Citizenship and Assimilation Grants Program is an important part of the agency’s efforts to support organizations that have proven to be effective in preparing immigrants for citizenship.
It is estimated that currently there are 8,9 million legal immigrants living in the United States who are eligible to apply for naturalization.
