Elon Musk buys a new plane for $ 78 million: what is it like

Elon Musk has placed an order for a new high-end private jet: the Gulfstream G700, according to a new report from Austonia. Delivery is expected in early 2023. John Chow.

Elon currently owns two private jets: Gulfstream G550 and Gulfstream G650 ER. It is not yet clear if the new G700 will replace one of Gulfstream's two aircraft or if Elon will add this new aircraft to its fleet.

The Gulfstream G700 debuted last year in Qatar, where it was unveiled as the company's flagship business jet. The aircraft is an updated version of the Gulfstream G650 offering a larger cabin with an additional 10 feet and one inch of living space.

The extra 3 meters of cabin space is really the only difference between the G650 ER and the G700. Both aircraft have the same range of 13 km and the same top speed of Mach 000. It is currently the fastest private jet you can buy, at least until the Bombardier Global 0,925 (which can reach Mach 8000) comes out. The base price of the G0,94 is $700 million.

You might be wondering if Elon is looking for more space, why not buy something really big like a BBJ 787. Sure, it costs a lot more ($239 million before the cost of the cabin), but that doesn't mean Elon isn't can afford it. The first reason is that the plane is too big to land at smaller airports. The second reason is speed. The maximum speed of the BBJ is Mach 0,85.

This means that the G700 can outperform the BBJ from the Gigafactory in Austin to the Gigafactory in Shanghai by one hour. Time is money, especially if you are Elon Musk.
