Ilon Musk opened the first high-speed tunnel near Los Angeles

The object was developed in the framework of the project The Loop Transportation System of The Boring Company, which is designed to solve the problem with traffic jams. The length of the tunnel is almost 2 km, the cost is about $ 10 million.

The Boring Company of the American billionaire and owner of the private space company SpaceX Ilona Mask opened her first high-speed tunnel near Los Angeles, Reuters reports.

The two-kilometer underground tunnel Loop Transportation System has earned in the small town of Hawthorne, where the headquarters of The Boring Company and SpaceX is located. The construction took almost two years. The tunnel was the first in the framework of the project to combat congestion on the roads developed by The Boring Company.

The first to go through the tunnel was an employee of the company at the Tesla Model X: in two minutes the car covered the entire section of 1,8 km. The Los Angeles Times points out that during the test, problems were discovered: two concrete structures against the wall were so uneven in some places that Tesla seemed to be driving along a dirt road. Musk assured that in the future, engineers will certainly fix everything, but now there simply wasn’t enough time. “It will be as smooth as glass,” he promised.

As follows from the description of the project on the official website of the company, in order to solve the problems of “destructive traffic jams”, it is necessary to transfer the roads to 3D: this means the appearance of flying cars or special tunnels. Since the former, with currently existing technologies, are less resistant to weather phenomena, the company decided to build tunnels.

Especially for the Loop Transportation System, Tesla cars and other electric cars will have retractable side wheels that can be removed as needed. The model of such a machine Musk showed on his Twitter.

The cost of one such tunnel, specifies Reuters, is about $ 10 million. This price includes all earthworks, the construction of internal infrastructure with lighting, ventilation, security systems, communications, and more.
