Illinois Law Enforces Protection Against Eviction of Immigrant Tenants

Illinois Governor Jay Robert Pritzker signed a new measure to protect residents from eviction based on their citizenship or immigration status. Writes about this CBS Chicago.

The Immigrant Protection Act enters into force immediately. According to the document, landlords cannot evict or intimidate tenants, threatening to disclose their status to any person, organization or law enforcement agency.

Illinois became the second state in the country, after California, to enact a similar law.

If a homeowner or property owner is trying to evict, take revenge, or report immigrants or their families, victims can file a civil lawsuit against the homeowner for damage and injuries resulting from his actions. Owners can also be fined up to 2000 dollars for each violation.

“Where you're born has nothing to do with your ability to pay rent on time, and that's what the landlord-tenant relationship should be based on,” Pritzker said. “We are making Illinois the first state in the Midwest to protect immigrant residents and give them a little more certainty during these uncertain times.”

Illinois Senator Christina Castro is one of the authors of the bill.

“Renters should feel free to come forward and report these important housing issues, regardless of their status,” Castro said.
