'The game is over': how Trump and his team responded to the publication of the Muller report

"I'm having a good day, it's called 'no collusion, no obstruction of justice.' By the way, never has been and never will be,” Trump said at the White House.

“This should never happen again with another president, this deception,” he added.

He also promised to “get to the roots” of this investigation, hinting at the need to find someone who started all this hype, which was based on false accusations.

The Muller report, consisting of more than 400 pages, was published in 11: 00. Attorney General William Barr held a press conference before publicizing the report, repeating that the investigation found no evidence of collusion between officials of Trump's headquarters and Russian representatives during the presidential election of 2016.

The report itself states: “During the investigation, it was not established that the members of Trump’s headquarters colluded in or coordinated their activities with the Russian government in his election campaign activities.”

With regard to allegations of obstruction of justice, the report describes the 10 episodes involving Trump and, according to Barr, “potential legal theories are discussed to link these actions with elements of obstruction crime”. But Barr said that the White House “fully cooperated” with the investigation, and that he came to the conclusion that there is not enough evidence to accuse Trump of obstructing justice.

Trump and his allies have repeatedly declared victory in this long process, despite the fact that the Democrats declared their intention to continue their own investigation, to interrogate Muller, and to challenge the Department of Justice’s decision to classify parts of the report.

A team of his lawyers made a long statement, calling the report "a complete victory for the president."

“The report emphasizes what we have maintained from the beginning - there was no collusion, there was no obstruction of justice. After a 17-month investigation, the testimony of approximately 500 witnesses, the issuance of 2800 subpoenas, the execution of nearly 500 search warrants, early morning raids, the review of more than 1,4 million pages of documents and the unprecedented cooperation of the President, it is clear that there were no criminal violations ", the lawyers said in a statement.

“This acquittal of the President is an important step forward for the country and a strong reminder that this type of abuse must never be tolerated again,” the statement said.

What it turned out from the report:

• The report has more 400 pages. The part devoted to the investigation of relations with Russia, takes 199 pages. The part about whether Trump impeded justice - 182 pages. Another 30-40 pages - application.
• It follows from the report that in May 2017 of the year, having learned from Deputy Minister of Justice Jeff Sessions that the head of the ministry appointed Robert Muller as Special Prosecutor, Trump said: “Oh God. It's horrible. This is the end of my presidency. I [end].
• The evidence discovered by Muller proves that the president tried to curb the investigation of the special prosecutor in order to protect himself, and also that he wanted to fire the special prosecutor himself. At the same time, Muller did not find evidence that Trump fired the FBI director James Komi (it was he who started the “Russian investigation”) in order to hide his own deal with Moscow.
• At the same time, Muller noted that attempts to thwart the investigation were not crowned with success, since Trump's subordinates did not carry out his orders.
• Trump knew that his lawyer, Michael Cohen, was giving the congress false testimony that the president had never had business interests in Russia. In fact, they were - it turned out that Trump, through Cohen, was trying to negotiate the construction of the Trump Tower tower in the Moscow City area, moreover, he did this when he was already a presidential candidate. However, the Special Prosecutor did not receive evidence that Trump had forced Cohen to lie to Congress. Cohen eventually got three years in prison - including for lying to lawmakers.
• The Russian government has extensively and systematically intervened in the 2016 presidential election of the year, the report says. The investigation revealed "numerous links between the Russian government and the Trump campaign." The investigation found that the Russian government believed that it would benefit from the Trump presidency, and worked to achieve such a result, and representatives of Trump's headquarters expected that they would win the election thanks to information stolen and disclosed by the efforts of the Russian authorities. However, the investigation did not confirm that Trump's headquarters had conspired with the Russian authorities or coordinated with them their interference in the elections.
• Immediately after the elections, people associated with the Russian authorities began to get in touch with representatives of Trump's headquarters through various channels. One of them in the report is called Sergei Kislyak, who was then Russia's ambassador to the United States. The Muller team believes that these contacts were approved by the Russian side at the highest level. However, there is no evidence that as a result, Trump somehow coordinated his actions with Russia.
• Trump answered the questions of the Special Prosecutor in writing instead of coming to the oral interrogation. The written answers of the team Muller assessed for the most part "inadequate" - most of the questions Trump said that he "does not remember." The team of the special prosecutor could have him called for on-site interrogation, but decided not to do this so as not to delay the investigation.
• Müller was unable to say with certainty whether there were signs of obstruction of justice in Trump’s actions. In his opinion, the congress should take a decision on this.
