And again shooting at school: guests of the graduation ceremony were shot in New Orleans
Three people were injured in the shooting, which took place after a May 31 graduation ceremony on the Louisiana Xavier University campus in New Orleans. CNN.
One of the victims, an elderly woman, has died, New Orleans Police Deputy Chief Christopher Goodley told reporters. According to authorities, the elderly woman was celebrating her grandson's graduation. The investigation believes that she was an accidental victim of the shooting.
An anonymous witness of the incident reported that he heard about 20 shots, writes news.com.au.
The university hosted the graduation ceremony of the nearby Morris Jeff Community School.
The shooting occurred around 11:45 a.m. when NOPD security personnel engaged in a firefight in the parking lot of the Xavier University Conference Center, according to a NOPD press release. When the police arrived, they found three victims of firearms - two men and one woman. All of them were taken to local medical institutions.
“The woman died in the hospital,” the message says.
“Apparently there was a fight between two women,” Goodley suggested. “After this fight, the subjects pulled out weapons and shots were fired.”

Shots were fired shortly before noon on May 31 after a high school graduation ceremony.
Patricia Perkins, principal at the Morris Jeff School, said in a statement that Tuesday was meant to be a day of celebration for seniors.
“Morris Jeff is a strong school community and we will come together to help each other,” Perkins said. “Every day we teach our children to resolve their differences with words and to show compassion to each other. Our graduates will be significant in this world because they learn to see each other as equal people. This resolve will only become stronger after today’s horrific incident.”
New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell spoke at the graduation ceremony but left before the shooting took place. Late that afternoon, she released a statement saying that “gun violence continues to haunt our city.”
“We will remain focused on leveraging local and federal partnerships to prioritize initiatives that focus on violence prevention strategies,” the mayor said in a statement. “However, we recognize that there is a higher degree of personal responsibility that must be present to de-escalate these situations.” As we see across the country, gun violence is a disease, and the cure requires a collaborative approach that involves each of us coming together to make our streets safer.”
New Orleans Public Schools Superintendent Henderson Lewis Jr. said he was "outraged and saddened by the callousness" that manifested itself on May 31 in the form of violence.

“Morris Jeff graduates were there to share their collective accomplishments and bask in the light of their future, only to have their optimism crushed by gun violence,” Lewis said. “All our children have the right to safety, and we must do everything in our power to protect that right.” My heart breaks for the families of the victims and I implore us all to rally around them in their time of need.”
