A humpback whale sank a sailboat off the coast of Alaska, and a family of three miraculously survived.
Last month, an Alaskan family sailing in Glacier Bay narrowly escaped death when a massive humpback whale struck their boat. Lewis writes about the family's rescue story. New York Post.
Tania Lewis told the publication that it happened on July 29 in Glacier Bay. She and her family had fallen asleep after a day of sailing. Around 23:30 PM, some giant animal struck the hull hard, rocking the boat.
"We heard a loud thud," Tania recalled. "And then the boat just sank."

Lewis's son, Lou, was awake and reading at the time. He managed to warn his mother and father that the ship was sinking.
However, even this did not give the family time to collect the emergency supply kit that was in the cabin.
The situation was complicated by the fact that the emergency inflatable boat attached to the vessel turned upside down.
"It was filled with water. It took us a while to figure out what to do, and we ended up accidentally flipping it over, after which we were able to right it," Tania continued.

“That’s how my husband and I got to the shore,” she added, clarifying that their son swam to land using his backpack as an improvised flotation device.
After reaching land about 120 meters away, the Lewis family faced new difficulties.
"If we'd had time, even just a few extra minutes, we could have made ourselves much more comfortable on the beach. But in the end, we had very little spare clothing and only the bare minimum of fire-making equipment," Lewis noted.
The family had to spend the night in the cold and wait until 6:30 a.m. the next day for rescuers to arrive.
Rescue teams found the sunken vessel and discovered a large hole in its keel left by the whale.
Lewis later spoke with a national park biologist, who suggested the whale struck the boat while chasing fish.

Despite what happened, Lewis said she and her family were able to appreciate the experience in their own way.
"It was a truly magical night: the full moon rose. After all, when else will you get to spend the whole night around the campfire with your family?" she concluded.
